Balance Exercises for Seniors to Prevent Falls at Home

Home balance exercises should help you move more safely during everyday tasks, not test how long you can hold a difficult pose. Supported weight shifts, controlled chair transfers and appropriately chosen stepping practice can form part of a plan. The exercises and assistance you need should be based on your current steadiness, health and fall history.

Set up before you start moving

Use a clear space beside a fixed counter or another sturdy support. Check that the floor is dry, your footwear is secure and a chair will not slide when you use it.

If you need someone nearby to stand or transfer safely, arrange that assistance. Do not practise alone simply because an exercise looks easy on screen.

Keep your walking aid available if you have been advised to use one. Stop if you become dizzy, feel faint or develop pain. Exercise is not the right response to an unexplained sudden loss of balance.

Practise shifting weight with support

Standing beside a stable counter with both feet on the floor, gently move your weight toward one foot and then the other. Stay within a range you can control and keep your hands ready to support you.

This movement relates to walking, when your weight moves from one leg to the other. It should not become a large sideways lean that you struggle to reverse.

A physiotherapist can adjust foot position and assistance to your ability. The next step is not automatically removing your handhold; control and safety come before difficulty.

Use a chair transfer as a strength task

Getting out of a chair uses leg strength and balance together. Start from a firm, stable chair at a suitable height, with arm support if needed.

A physiotherapist can assess how you position your feet, move forward and stand. Practising an appropriate version can be more useful than repeatedly struggling from a low sofa.

The return to sitting matters too. Aim for a controlled movement rather than dropping into the seat. If the transfer is unsafe, have it assessed before turning it into an exercise routine.

Link practice to the places you lose confidence

Turning into a hallway, navigating a step and carrying something while walking each place different demands on balance. Tell the clinician which tasks feel uncertain so practice can address them.

Do not introduce eyes-closed exercises, unstable surfaces or unsupported one-leg standing on your own. A harder activity is not necessarily a more useful one.

Also check the home itself. Better lighting and a clear path can matter as much as an exercise when the difficulty occurs during a nighttime trip to the bathroom.

Build a home plan with Mobile Therapy

Through mobile physiotherapy, Mobile Therapy can assess movement in the room and with the furniture you actually use. Its falls prevention program considers balance work alongside other rehabilitation needs.

Mobile Therapy serves homes and community settings in Metro Vancouver and Nanaimo. Discuss recent falls, dizziness and the support you already use so the clinician can identify suitable next steps and any need for medical follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

How many repetitions should I do?

Ask for an amount suited to your assessment. More repetitions are not helpful if control deteriorates.

Should I stop using my hands for support?

Not automatically. Assistance should change only when the exercise remains safe and controlled.

Can I practise while holding furniture?

Only use support that is stable and appropriate. Lightweight or rolling furniture can move unexpectedly.

What if I have fallen recently?

Report the fall and any injury or new symptoms before progressing exercises.
